Graze on Grand

I Like It Here copy.jpg

Until end December 2015 exhibition of paintings by Angela Charles at Graze on Grand, St Leonards, Hastings.

'The first thing that struck me as I looked at Angela Charles' exhibition is the clear sense of poetic freedom embedded in the marks and gestures of her beautiful paintings. The tangible energy of lyricism awakens immediately your emotional and visual responsiveness, it commands you to look, attempt discrimination and imagine. Then to step back and muse, to open in rhythm with her tonality and just shut up trying to figure logically and feel into them properly, quietly, with patience and respect.
That said from the outset, we are looking then into another realm of signifying topography, where landscape is clearly made of forces other than just visual or perspectival logic, although these visual disciplines are skilfully woven in and remain visible in the paintings. I thought of Cy Twombly, late Richard Diebenkorn strangely and Prunella Clough's sublime grey interior studies all in the space of a few seconds. Something powerful is going on here, painterly lyricism, sophisticated abstraction, up close intimacy, what can it mean?
Charles paints on aluminium or wood panels spray-primed and sanded completely smooth, so that whatever textures emerge later are a consequence of her absolutely alive, responsive painting process. She submerges herself in a location, makes sketches and written notes, before making the larger paintings from memory. I described this process to a well educated artworld colleague, who remarked rather detachedly, 'Yes there's alot of people doing that these days'. Im affronted, in these times of potential eco-dysfunction, artists are responding immediately and intuitively, we need to listen. They are saying urgently to all of us, 'Stop, look, feel, think, care, notice, connect, get out there, walk, dawdle, dream, imagine, see and appreciate your home base, which by the way doesnt have an ip address. These are paintings that reward long looking, long feeling into, long dwelling-with, they are rich and loaded like poems. Hot foot it down there to see them.'
